5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Assam

way2barak Jan 5: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Assam at 4:17 AM today. The epicentre of the tremor was near Assam’s Morigaon district at a depth of 50 km. The tremors were felt across several parts of central Assam, including Morigaon and nearby districts, triggering panic among residents who rushed out of their homes. All India Radio Guwahati reports that no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property have been received so far. People in the districts of Barak valley also felt the jolt. The tremors were also felt in neighbouring countries of Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh.

“EQ of M: 5.1, On: 05/01/2026 04:17:40 IST, Lat: 26.37 N, Long: 92.29 E, Depth: 50 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam,” the National Centre for Seismology said in a post on X.
