Indian Philosophers’ Day celebrated at Assam University

Way2barak, August 1 : To honour the enduring legacy of Indian philosophical traditions, the Department of Philosophy, in collaboration with the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems at Assam University, Silchar, celebrated Indian Philosophers’ Day 2025 with a two-day national seminar titled “Revisiting the Upanishads: Classical and Contemporary Approaches” held on July 28 and 29, 2025. Sponsored by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research and the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, the event brought together distinguished academicians, researchers, and students from across the country.

The seminar was inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the lamp by dignitaries including Prof. Asoke Kr. Sen, Vice Chancellor (i/c) of Assam University, keynote speaker Prof. Nirmalya Narayan Chakraborty, Vice Chancellor of Presidency University, Kolkata, and Guest of Honour Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, former Vice Chancellor of Assam University. Also present were Prof. Joyati Bhattacharya, Dean, S.R. School of Philosophical Studies, Prof. Gangabhushan M. Molankal, Director, Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, Dr. Pius V. Thomas, Head of the Philosophy Department, and Dr. Munmun Chakraborty, Seminar Coordinator.
Dr. Pius V. Thomas welcomed the gathering and the participants. Prof. Gangabhushan, Director, IKS, AUS and Prof. Joyati Bhattacharya, Dean I/C SRSPS, AUS, spoke on the occasion. Dr. Munmun Chakraborty introduced the theme, emphasizing the continued relevance of the Upanishads and the need to reinterpret their teachings in modern contexts.
In his keynote address, Prof. Nirmalya Chakraborty delved into the concept of Paňcākośa from the Taittirīya Upanishad and explored the triune powers of Brahman. Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee enriched the discussion with reflections on Śaṅkarācārya and Madhvācārya’s commentaries on various Upanishads. Dr. Chongtham Nonglen Meitei, the Deputy Coordinator, concluded the inaugural session with a vote of thanks.
Scholars from various philosophical traditions, including Prof. Asoke K Sen, Dept. of Physics, AUS, Prof. Preetam Ghosal, Jadavpur University, Dr. Shakuntala Bora, Gauhati University, Dr. Pius V Thomas, Prof. Subhra Nag, Prof. Nirmali Barman, Dept. of Philosophy, Assam University, Prof. Shanti Pokhrel, Dept. of Sanskrit, Dr. Jaydeep Chakraborty, Dept. of English, Dr. Govind Sharma, Dept. of Sanskrit, Assam University, Dr. Sindhu Poudyal, Tripura University, Neha Keshari, IIT Tirupathi, Vidushi Pandey, IIT Bhubaneswar, Adreeja Sarkar, JNU, presented papers in the Academic Sessions, which were in both online and offline modes.
