3 out of 5 delivery pipes at Sadar Ghat plant damaged; repairing work on in war-footing: PHE

Water supply disrupted in Silchar

May 20: The condition of the barge at Sadar Ghat water supply plant is very serious as 3 out of 5 delivery pipe lines were torn away by flowing water at high speed on Thursday night. Infact, water flows through these pipes to the plant. Till then, with limited capability, the PHE was trying to supply water at some areas of Silchar town. However, after the delivery pipe lines were broken, things assumed a critical shape.

On Thursday, additional 25 staff were engaged for restoration of the damaged pipe lines. Along with regular staff of PHE and Silchar Municipal Board, the additional staff worked throughout the night to repair them. However, as the entire Sadar Ghat plant too was water logged, the repair team was finding it very difficult to set the machinery in order. As a result, water supply was disrupted both on Thursday and Friday. On Friday, one pipe could be repaired somehow and water could be supplied in some parts of Silchar, like Shillongpatty, Central Road etc, from 6 AM to 8 AM. Workers are working hard getting down in water-logged plant.

The repairing work is monitored under the supervision of an Additional Deputy Commissioner, Engineers of both PHE and SMB. An officer stated, “Inspite of hostile condition due to heavy speed of flood water, we are trying our level best to restore normalcy.”

Meanwhile, due to disruption of water supply, people especially in the Municipal areas had to suffer a lot as maximum of the people are dependent solely on supply water by PHE.
