Foreigner’s Notice: Another Bengali commits suicide

২৮ অক্টোবরঃ ফরেনার্স ট্রাইব্যুনালের বিদেশি নোটিশ পেয়ে আত্মঘাতী হলেন উদালগুড়ি জেলার এক প্রৌঢ়। নিজের বাড়ির পেছনদিকে একটি গাছে ঝুলন্ত অবস্থায় ঘাগ্রা গ্রামের দীপক দেবনাথের মৃতদেহ উদ্ধার করে পুলিশ। পারিবারিক সূত্রে জানা গিয়েছে, জুলাইয়ে ট্রাইব্যুনালের নোটিশ যায় দীপকবাবুর নামে। তাঁকে ট্রাইব্যুনালে গিয়ে নিজের নাগরিকত্ব প্রমাণের নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছিল। সে থেকে মানসিক অবসাদে ভুগছিলেন তিনি।

তাঁর ভাইপো উত্তম দেবনাথ জানান, ৩০ জুলাই প্রকাশিত এনআরসি-র প্রথম খসড়াতেই তাঁর নাম ওঠে। রয়েছে তাঁর স্ত্রী ও দুই কন্যার নামও। কিন্তু এর ঠিক আগের দিন তিনি নোটিশটি পান। তাতে লেখা ছিল, ১২ জুলাই ট্রাইব্যুনালে উপস্থিত হতে। কিছুদিন পরে ট্রাইব্যুনালের এক কর্মীকে তিনি নোটিশটি দেখিয়ে হাজিরার কথা বললে ওই কর্মী তাঁকে ভয়ভীতি দেখায়। নির্দিষ্ট তারিখে উপস্থিত না হওয়ায় তাকে ডিটেনশন ক্যাম্পে পাঠিয়ে দেওয়া হতে পারে বলেও জানায় তাকে। এইসব বলে তিনি বাঁচার একমাত্র রাস্তা হিসেবে মোটা টাকা দাবি করে। উত্তমবাবুর কথায়, একদিকে নোটিশ, অন্যদিকে মোটা অঙ্কের ঘুষের কথা ভেবে কাকু কিছুদিন ধরে সারাক্ষণ চুপ করে বসে থাকতেন।

October 28: An aged man of Udalguri district committed suicide after getting notice from Foreigner’s Tribunal. Police has recovered the body of Dipak Debnath which was hanging on a tree in Ghagra village. Sources from the deceased family has informed that Dipak Debnath received the foreigner’s notice in the month of July. He was directed to prove his citizenship in the Foreigner’s Tribunal. Since then, he was suffering from mental agony.

His nephew, Uttam Debnath informed that the name of his uncle Dipak Debnath was there in the first draft of NRC issued on 30 July. Names of his wife and daughters were also there in the first draft. He was, however, served the notice the previous day. It was written that he will have to appear in the Tribunal on 12 July. A few days later, he went to the Tribunal and showed the notice to a staff of over there. That staff of the Tribunal said that such notice may result in dire consequences, which made Debnath nervous. Further, the staff also demanded a fat amount as bribe. Uttam Debnath said that his uncle committed suicide by being mentally disturbed by the notice on one hand and also because of worrying about how to manage money for paying bribe at the Tribunal.
