2 towns in Assam including Hailakandi declared ‘Open Defecation Free Plus’ by Ministry of Jal Shakti

February 21: It is indeed a matter of pride that Hailakandi town in Assam was declared as Open Defecation Free plus (ODF+) by Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. It needs mention here that only 2 towns in Assam were declared as ODF+. A total of 1301 towns in India were selected for this prestigious tag.

Taking to social media, Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi wrote, “We are very proud and happy to announce that only two towns in Assam were declared as Open Defecation Free plus ODF+ by Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India out of which Hailakandi Municipality is one. Credit to all the foot workers and line staff who start very early in the morning cleaning all roads and lanes, engineers, staff, DPO, EO Shri Tridip Roy ACS, ward commissioners/members/chairperson of Hailakakdi Municipality. Congratulations to the district for the proud moment. Thank you for all your support.”

The ODF Plus is an extension of the ODF programme under the Swachch Bharat Mission. Its objective is to sustain the ODF programme and to take up solid and liquid waste management. The ODF Plus programme has four verticals — biodegradable waste management, plastic waste management, grey water management and faecal sludge management.
