July 8: The final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be published on 31 July, 2019. However, even before the final publication of NRC, reports are floating in where people are being harassed at the Meghalaya border while entering or leaving Cachar District, Assam. In this regard, former Silchar MP and President All India Mahila Congress (AIMC), Sushmita Dev has written a letter to Cornad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

In her letter addressed to Meghalaya Chief Minister, Sushmita Dev urged upon him to look into the matter and to take prompt action. In her letter Ms. Dev wrote, “People crossing over from Meghalaya to Cachar district are being harassed at the border by the police on the pretext that they are foreigners. There are also allegations that Meghalaya Police is forcibly demanding money. These reports are a cause for concern as this is totally unjustified and unlawful.”

It needs mention here that similar incidents were reported from Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram after the publication of the final draft list of NRC in 2018.
