2 from Assam held for stealing ATM cards of dead Covid patient at Coimbatore & withdrawing ₹8.67 lakh
April 9: K Yashodha, was admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore with Covid-19 symptoms and passed away on May 4, last year. She had two debit cards (one from Union Bank of India and the other from City Union Bank) which were used to pay the bills of her treatment. Two persons from Assam, who were working as cleaners in that private hospital at Coimbatore allegedly stole the ATM cards of the woman soon after her death and withdrew money several times.
The issue came to light after the woman’s husband checked her account and noticed that a total of Rs 8.67 lakh was being siphoned off. M Krishnasamy, her husband, filed a complaint with Peelamedu police under sections 379 and 420 of the IPC following the incident.
As such, police started their investigation into the matter and on the basis of statements from the hospital authority coupled with other evidences arrested two cleaners of the hospital where the deceased woman was admitted. The duo were identified as Raj Panging of Lakhipathar and Atul Chgogai of Anipur in Assam.
