₹2.5 lakh each given to widows in Assam who lost their husbands due to Covid
July 11: Covid-19 has left many families devastated, especially those who lost an earning member during the pandemic. To support such families, 883 widows who lost their husbands to COVID-19, the Government of Assam have launched Chief Minister’s Covid-19 Widow Support Scheme on Sunday. The scheme was officially inaugurated at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakhetra in Guwahati.
Speaking about this new scheme, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Many precious lives have been lost during the ongoing pandemic. With a motive to provide social and financial security to all widows who have lost their husbands due to COVID-19, the Government of Assam has launched a special ‘Chief Minister’s COVID-19 Widows Support Scheme’. The Scheme promises a one-time financial assistance of Rs. 2.5 lakhs to help such widows.”

On Sunday, an one-time financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh each to all identified widows were handed over by the Chief Minister. During the day, 176 cheques were handed over to such beneficiaries. The remaining cheques will be handed over to the other widows by the Guardian Ministers.
CM Sarma further stated, “We truly hope this support helps the affected families. We are also working on budgetary provisions for other victims of the pandemic.” Also present there were ministers Keshab Mahanta, Atul Bora, Ranjit Kumar Das among others.
