৯ মার্চ : রাজনীতিবিদরা জনগণের কাছে দায়বদ্ধ। তাদের ভোট দিয়ে নির্বাচিত করা হয়, যাতে তাঁরা সমাজের কল্যাণ ও সমস্যাগুলি সমাধান করতে পারে। কিন্তু যদি এই রাজনীতিবিদরা জনগণের সমস্যার সমাধান না করে, তখন কী হবে? বিশ্বের বেশিরভাগ দেশে দেখা যায়, একজন নেতা তাঁর দায়িত্ব পালনে ব্যর্থ হওয়ার পরেও সে ক্ষমতায় থাকে।

তবে সে যদি তাঁর দায়িত্ব পালনে ব্যর্থ হয়, তাহলে নির্বাচনের সময় তাঁদের ভোট দান থেকে বিরত থাকে সাধারণ মানুষ। তবে সর্বত্র যে এমন হয়, তা নয়। ইতালিতে অবস্থিত একটি শহর, যার নাম ট্রেন্টো। এই শহরে কোনও রাজনীতিবিদ যদি ভুল করেন, কিংবা নিজের দেওয়া প্রতিশ্রুতি মত যদি কাজ না করেন, তাহলে তাদের শাস্তি দেন শহরের মানুষ।

ওই রাজনীতিবিদকে প্রথমে খাঁচায় বন্দি করা হয়, তারপর খাঁচা সমেত রাজনীতিবিদকে নদীর জলে অর্ধ ডুবিয়ে রাখা হয়। তবে এটা কোনও মৃত্যুদন্ড নয়। খাঁচাটি মাত্র এক সেকেন্ডের জন্য জলে নামানো হয়, যাতে ওই রাজনীতিবিদ নিজের ভুল বুঝতে পারেন। এই কাজটি যখন করা হয়, তখন অনেক মানুষ জড় হয়। তারা রাজনীতিবিদের এই অবস্থা দেখে মজা পান।

নেতাদের শাস্তি অস্বাভাবিক নয়। বিশ্বের অনেক জায়গার এর নিজস্ব রীতিনীতি এবং আচার-অনুষ্ঠান রয়েছে। ট্রেন্টোতে এই নিয়মটিকে ‘টোনকা’ বলা হয়। মূলত শহরের রাজনীতিবিদ এবং বিখ্যাত ব্যক্তি, যারা দিনের পর দিন জনগণকে অপমান করে এসেছেন, তাদের এভাবে বিচার করা হয়। আগামী ২৫ জুন এটি অনুষ্ঠিত হবে।
