102 year Chandradhar Das aspires to vote till his death

১৪ সেপ্টেম্বরঃ হাঁটতে-চলতে পারেন না ধলাইর বরইবস্তির  চন্দ্রধর দাস। বাড়িতে সারাক্ষণ শুয়েই থাকেন। কত আর দেবে শরীর!  বয়স যে ১০২ বছর। কিন্তু ট্রাইব্যুনালের ডাক এলে দোতলার সিড়ি ভাঙতেই হয় তাঁকে। আজও ভাঙলেন। সে জন্য আক্ষেপ নেই তাঁর। শুধু একটাই চিন্তা, মামলার রায়দান দেরি হয়ে গেলে ভোট দেওয়া হবে না তাঁর। তাই আজ ট্রাইব্যুনালের সদস্য-বিচারককে সোজাসুজি বলেই বসলেন, ‘কতদিন আর বাঁচব। ভোটের দিনে যেন ভোটটা দিতে পারি, সেটা দেখবেন।’ বিচারক অবশ্য কিছু বলেননি। দিনের শুনানি শেষ হলে শুধু জানিয়ে দেন, পরবর্তী তারিখ ৩০ অক্টোবর।

১৯৬৬ সালের সিটিজেনশিপ সার্টিফিকেট রযেছে চন্দ্রধরবাবুর হাতে। ১৯৯৭ সালের ভোটার তালিকায়ও তাঁর নাম রয়েছে।নাম আছে ২০১৪-র ভোটার তালিকাতেও। এর পরও কী করে তাঁকে বাংলাদেশি বলে সন্দেহ করা হল? চন্দ্রধরবাবুর আইনজীবী সৌমেন চৌধুরী জানিয়েছেন, মামলার নথিতে বোঝা যায়, ১৯৯৭ সালেই তাঁকে বিদেশি বলে অভিযুক্ত করা হয়। ২০১৬-য় তা যায় ফরেনার্স ট্রাইব্যুনালে। এই বছরের ২ জানুয়ারি একতরফা রায়ে ট্রাইব্যুনাল তাঁকে বিদেশি ঘোষণা করে। ৩১ মার্চ পুলিশ বিছানা তুলে এনে জেলে পুরে দেয়। এখন অবশ্য তিনি জামিনে মুক্ত। এই সমযে চন্দ্রধরবাবুর একটাই চিন্তা, মামলা দ্রুত শেষ না হলে তিনি যে আর ভোট দিতে পারবেন না।

জামিন পেলেও ট্রাইব্যুনালে সরকারি আইনজীবী না থাকায় তাঁর মামলার দেরি হয়ে যাচ্ছিল। আজ সরকারি আইনজীবীকে পাওয়া গিয়েছে। সৌমেনবাবুর আশা, এখন আর বেশি সময় লাগবে না।

September 14: It was indeed shocking news for many when 102 years old Chandradhar Das, a resident of Borai Basti under Dholai constituency in the Amraghat area of Cachar district and who possessed a citizenship card of 1966, was declared foreigner by an ex parte judgement of the tribunal on 2 January. The feeble Chandradhar Das was later on granted bail on humanitarian ground. He was summoned by Foreigners’ Tribunal-6 (FT-6), Silchar to prove his citizenship. However, in the absence of Government Pleader, he was asked to appear again on 14 September.

The old man is inflicted with multiple old age ailments like hearing disability and memory loss. Inflicted by old age related ailments, Chandradhar Das along with his daughter reached FT-6 on Friday morning. However, at this age, he becomes bound to climb the stairs and go to Foreigners Tribunal in the first floor. Today also he had to go to the 1^st floor for the hearing. Interestingly, he does not lament for this. He is rather worried for one matter. If his case is not disposed off early than he will not be able to cast his vote. This is his prime concern. He straightway said to the Judge of the Tribunal, “I won’t be surviving for long. Please see to it that I can cast my vote during election.” The Judge, however, refrained from making any comment on it. After the day’s proceedings, he was asked to come again on October 30 for the next hearing.

Chandhar Das has with him his Citizenship Certificate of 1966. His name is also there in the voters list of 1997 and 2014. Even after that, how can he be suspected as a Bangladeshi? His advocate Soumen Choudhury said that the documents related to his case reveals that he has been accused as a foreigner in the year 1997 itself. His case went to the Foreigners Tribunal in 2016. Since then, he has, as if seen hell in his life. Advocate Choudhury further said that as the Government Pleader is now available, the verdict can be expected very soon.
