Ahead of Assembly polls, Congress forms Grand Alliance in Assam with AIUDF & left parties
Jan. 19: The political atmosphere in Assam since almost a year was ripe with speculations of an alliance between the Congress and AIUDF. However, there were many u-turns since then. But things became clear on Tuesday when State Congress President Ripun Bora in a press meet said that the Congress party will have an alliance with CPI, CPI(M) and Anchalik Gana Morcha. The announcement was made in presence of AICC observer and Chattisgarh CM Bhupesh Waghel, AICC Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh and AICC leader Mukul Wasnik.
The ‘Grand Alliance’ has been formed with parties including Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), MP Ajit Bhuyan-led Anchalik Gana Morcha, CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML). The party also said that it would welcome Assam Jatiya Parishad and Raijor Dal to join the alliance as well. AIDUF leaders Aminul Islam and Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasimi, CPM leaders Hemen Das and Deven Bhattacharya, CPI leader Munin Mahanta, CPI (ML) leader Vivek Das and, AGM leaders Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Bhuyan and Lachit Bordoli were present during the alliance meeting.
