NRC: Teacher turned lawyer commits suicide
২২ অক্টোবর : শিক্ষক পদ থেকে অবসর নেওয়ার পর আইনজীবীর পেশা শুরু করেছিলেন মঙ্গলদৈয়ের নীরোদ বরণ দাস। কিন্তু ট্রাইব্যুনালে বিদেশি ঘোষণার পর শেষমেশ আত্মহত্যার পথই বেছে নিলেন তিনি।
দীর্ঘ ৩৪ বছর স্কুল শিক্ষকের চাকরি করেন তিনি। চাকরি থেকে অবসর নেওয়ার পরই শুরু করেন আইন শিক্ষা। পাঠ শেষ করে বার লাইব্রেরিতে যোগ দিয়ে আইনজীবীর পেশাও আরম্ভ করেন। কিন্তু ট্রাইব্যুনালের একটি নোটিশ তাঁর পুরো জীবনটাকেই ওলটপালট করে দিল।
তাঁর পরিবারের সদস্যরা জানান, প্রায় দু’মাস আগে স্থানীয় এনআরসি সেবাকেন্দ্র তাঁকে জানায় যে তিনি বিদেশি। এ ব্যাপারে তাঁকে একটি নথি পাঠানো হয়েছে। তাছাড়া ফরেনার্স ট্রাইব্যুনাল থেকে তাঁকে একটি নোটিশও দেওয়া হয়েছে। তিনি ছাড়া তাঁর পরিবারের অন্য সব সদস্যের নাম ৩০ জুলাই প্রকাশিত এনআরসির চূড়ান্ত খসড়ায় অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়েছে। এ বিষয়টি তাঁকে খুব আশাহত করে। অবশেষে রবিবার প্রাতঃভ্রমণ থেকে ফিরেই তিনি আত্মহত্যার পথ বেছে নেন।
নীরোদ বরণ দাসের পরিবারের সদস্যরা জানান, তারা একটি সুইসাইড নোট পেয়েছেন। এতে তিনি লিখেছেন, এনআরসি প্রক্রিয়ায় বিদেশি নোটিশ পাওয়ার পর তিনি নিজের জীবন শেষ করে দেওয়ার পরিকল্পনা নেন।
এ দিকে, পুলিশ মৃত ব্যক্তির দেহটি পোস্ট মর্টেমের জন্য নিয়ে যেতে চাইলে বিপত্তি দেখা দেয়। প্রয়াত শিক্ষকের পরিবার ও স্থানীয় জনগণ পুলিশকে বাধা দেন। তারা এই মৃত্যুর জন্য এনআরসি কেন্দ্রের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ এনে প্রতিবাদ জানাতে থাকেন। পরে জেলাশাসক এ ব্যাপারে নিরপেক্ষ তদন্তের আশ্বাস দেওয়ার পরই প্রতিবাদকারীরা মৃতদেহটি পোস্টমর্টেমের জন্য নিয়ে যেতে দেন।
নীরোদ বরণ দাস ছাড়াও সারা রাজ্যের বেশ কয়েকজন লোক নাগরিকপঞ্জিতে নাম না আসায় আত্মহত্যার পথ বেছে নিয়েছেন। অন্যদিকে, চূড়ান্ত খসড়ায় নাম না থাকা রাজ্যের ৪০ লক্ষ মানুষের ভবিষ্যৎ কী হবে, তাও কেউ বলতে পারছেন না। পুরো বিষয়টি চূড়ান্ত অনিশ্চয়তার মধ্য দিয়েই চলেছে।
October 22: Humiliated over ‘Foreigner’ tag, Nirod Baran Das (74), a retired school teacher turned lawyer from Mangoldoi, Assam committed suicide on Sunday. Das who practiced law after retirement from service was served a notice from the Foreigners’ Tribunal. After working as a teacher in government school for 34 long years, he studied law after his retirement and joined the bar as an advocate.
His family members informed that about two months ago, local NRC Seva Kendra informed him that he had been marked a ‘foreigner’ and was served a document also in this regard. This was followed by a notice from the Foreigners’ Tribunal too. The names of all of his family members expect him were included in the final draft of NRC declared on 30 July 2018. This distressed him so much that he hanged himself on Sunday just after returning from morning walk.
The family members of Nirod Baran Das said that they have found a suicide note on which he wrote that in order to escape the humiliation of being marked as a foreigner after the NRC process, he had taken the drstic step of ending his life.
There was a great turmoil after the family members of Das along with the local people refused to allow the police to take his body for post-mortem. They were protesting against the NRC centre which marked him as a ‘foreigner’. Later on after getting assurance from the Deputy Commissioner about an impartial probe into the matter, they allowed the police to take the body of Nirod Baran Das for autopsy.
Apart from Das, some others in the state have also committed suicide after their names were not included in the NRC. It’s a long road ahead and none can say with certainty about the fate of 40 lakh people whose names were excluded from the final draft of NRC.
