Students’ Agitation rocks Assam University: 2 new buses granted

৩০ আগস্টঃ আন্দোলন করেই আরও ২টি বাস আদায় করল আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্র সংসদ। সঙ্গে মিলল স্বাস্থ্যকেন্দ্রের জন্য দুইজন অস্থায়ী চিকিতসক।

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ছাত্রছাত্রীদের জন্য ১২টি বাস থাকলেও ৪টি বাস অনেকদিন ধরে প্রায় বিকল। কোনওদিন মাঝপথে বিগড়ে যায়, কোনওদিন রাস্তায় নামতেই পারে না। ফলে ছাত্রছাত্রীদের বাদরঝোলা হয়ে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে যাতায়াত করতে হয়। বিশেষ করে, ফেরার সময় ছাত্রছাত্রীদের অন্য গাড়ি ধরতে হয়। নইলে ক্লাশ সেরেও ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা অপেক্ষা করতে হয়।  এ নিয়েই প্রতিবাদে সরব হয়েছে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্র সংসদ। আজ ক্লাশ বয়কট করে দল বেঁধে ছাত্রছাত্রীরা যায় উপাচার্যের অফিসকক্ষে। উপাচার্য ড. দিলীপচন্দ্র নাথ এই সময়ে শিলচরে নেই। নেই রেজিস্ট্রার ড. সঞ্জীব ভট্টাচার্যও।  ভারপ্রাপ্ত উপাচার্য রঞ্জুরানি ধামালা নিজের বিভাগ ছেড়ে না এসে জয়েন্ট রেজিস্ট্রার প্রদোষকিরণ নাথকে বিষয়টি সামাল দিতে বলেন। উপাচার্যের ফাঁকা ঘরে ঘণ্টাতিনেক অবস্থানের পর আলোচনা শুরু হয়। সিদ্ধান্ত হয়, প্রায়-অচল বাসগুলি শীঘ্র মেরামত করা হবে। সেইসঙ্গে আরও দুটি বেসরকারি বাস চালানো হবে। একটি চলবে হাইলাকান্দি থেকে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়। অন্যটি শিলচর-বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়।

স্বাস্থ্যকেন্দ্র নিয়েও ছাত্রছাত্রীদের দীর্ঘদিনের ক্ষোভ। দুইজন স্থায়ী চিকিতসক থাকলেও ছয়মাস ধরে তাঁদের কারও দেখা মিলছে না। ডা. দর্শনা পাটোয়া সন্তানের যত্ন সংক্রান্ত ছুটিতে রয়েছেন। স্টাডি লিভে আছেন আরেক ডাক্তার শতভিষা রায়চৌধুরী। আলোচনায় স্থির হয়, স্থায়ী চিকিতসকরা কাজে যোগ না দেওয়া পর্যন্ত দুইজন অস্থায়ী চিকিতসককে নিযুক্তি দেওয়া হবে।

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্র সংসদের সভাপতি মিলন দাস বলেন, তীব্র সমস্যাতেও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষের টনক নড়ে না। আন্দোলন করে দাবি আদায় করতে হয়!

30 August: The Students’ Union of Assam University, in the aftermath of their agitation could ultimately yield two more buses. Further, two temporary doctors for the health centre were also sanctioned.

Though there are 12 buses earmarked for the students of the university, yet four of them are almost out of order. At times, these buses go out of gears on the road and sometime they even fail to take to the streets. As a result, students become bound to board the over-crowded bus. Many a times, they have to wait for hours together after the class in the hope of a bus. Ultimately, many become bound to board private vehicles. The long accumulated grievance of the students took the form of an agitation on Thursday. Boycotting their classes, the students went to the office of the Vice Chancellor in large numbers and found that Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, the Vice Chancellor and Dr. Sanjib Bhattacharje, the Registrar were out of the town. Prof. R.R. Dhamela, the Vice Chancellor i/c preferred to stay at her own department and rather sent the Joint Registrar Prodush Kiran Nath to handle the matter. The students sat in ‘dharna’ in the room of the Vice Chancellor for almost 2 to 3 hours after which dialogue started between them and the university authority. In the discussion, it was decided that the defective buses will be repaired very soon. Further, two more private buses were granted. One will run between Hailakandi to university and the other will operate from Silchar to University.

Further, there was grievance among the students centering the health centre also. Though there were 2 permanent doctors, yet their whereabouts could not be traced since the last 3 months. Dr. Darshana Patoa is on Child Care Leave, whereas Dr. Satavisha Choudhury has availed study leave. After much deliberation, till the time the two permanent doctors join their services, two temporary doctors would be appointed.

Speaking during the occasion, Milon Das, President of Students’ Union said that. “The university authorities remain blind and deaf to the numerous genuine problems faced by the students. So, we had no other option but to resort to agitation to realize our demands.”
