March 14: Here are the major events that occurred on 14 March….

  • 14 March, 1592: “Ultimate Pi day”: on this day at 6.53am is the largest correspondence between calendar dates and significant digits of pi, since the introduction of the Julian calendar (3.14159265358).
  • 14 March, 1794: Eli Whitney patents the cotton gin machine revolutionizing the cotton industry in the southern US states.
  • 14 March, 1879: Birth of scientist Einstein. Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics. His work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science.
  • 14 March, 1931: The first sound film of India Alam Ara was released on this day. It was directed by Ardeshir Irani. The film was so popular that they actually had to get police to control crowd along the theatre. The film ran house full for more than 8 weeks on its release. Sadly there are no more known copies of the movies that have survived.
  • 14 March, 1932: George Eastman died on this day. American inventor and industrialist who was a pioneering manufacturer of photographic materials, including rolled film (first patented on 14 Oct 1884) and the Kodak camera (patented 4 Sep 1888). He founded the Eastman-Kodak Company, which for years held a virtual monopoly in the camera and film industry. His introduction of the first Kodak (a coined word, 1888, that became a trademark) camera helped to promote large-scale amateur photography.
  • 14 March, 1963: Death anniversary of Indian politician Jai Narayan Vyas . He was an Indian politician and the third chief minister of the State of Rajasthan. He hailed from Jodhpur city and was a leader of Indian National Congress party.
  • 14 March, 1965: One of India’s biggest film stars, Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan, better known as Aamir Khan, was born on this day.
  • 14 March, 1972: Birthday of Irom Chanu Sharmila who is an Indian social activist from the state of Manipur. She is also known as the Iron Lady. She started a hunger strike in the year 2000 against the implementation of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) in the state of Manipur. She finally broke this fast in the year 2016. Her fast which lasted for more than 500 weeks is regarded as the world longest hunger strike.
  • 14 March, 2018: Death of Stephen W Hawking. His principal areas of research are theoretical cosmology and quantum gravity. Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. Afflicted with Lou Gehrig’s disease, Hawking was confined to a wheelchair and was unable to speak without the aid of a computer voice synthesizer. However, despite his challenges, he utilized his intelligence, knowledge and abilities to make remarkable contributions to the field of cosmology. Hawking wrote the book ‘A Brief History of Time.’
  • 14 March, 2019: Google announces its employee Emma Haruka Iwao has broken the world record for calculating pi, to 31.4 trillion digits, on pi day using Google Cloud.
