MLA Amarchand Jain asks protesting journalists to give 24 hours more time to nab the culprits

Nov. 30: MLA Amarchand Jain assured the journalists who sat on dharna near Katigorah Police Station to give the police another 24 hours time to nab the culprits who manhandled three journalists of Katigorah Working Journalist Guild on last Saturday. Infact, from Tuesday morning, the Katigorah Journalist Guild along with other organisations like Badarpur Press Club, Katigorah Yuva Sangstha sat on dharna in front of the Katigorah Police Station.

On Saturday, an accident took place at Kalain in which two persons lost their lives. But when the journalists went to collect news of the incident, some miscreants attacked them. As a result, 3 newsmen of Katigorah Working Journalist Guild- Imad Uddin Majumder, Supriyo Dutta and Rafiq Ahmed Choudhury were attacked. A complaint in this regard was registered at Katigorah Police Station on that very day. Out of them, journalist Imad Uddin Majumder of Dainik Jugasankha sustained major injuries.

Since then, almost 36 hours have elapsed, but the administration has failed to nab the culprits. The Katigorah Working Journalist Guild has also given a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, Cachar through the OC of Katigorah on Sunday. In the memorandum, it was categorically stated that if the culprits are not identified and arrested within 10 AM on Monday, then the journalists would sit for protest demonstration at Katigorah Police Station. It is in this regard that the Katigorah Working Journalist Guild along with some other organisations sat for dharna and declared that until the culprits are nabbed, they would continue with their agitation.

Meanwhile, towards afternoon, Amarchand Jain, MLA Katigorah arrived at Katigorah Police Station and interacted with the agitating journalists. Addressing the journalists Amarchand Jain said, “This is indeed a very deplorable incident and I strongly denounce this act. When I came to know about this incident, I asked the Police Super to find out the criminals at the earliest.”

MLA Jain further said, “As regards transfer of OC of Katigorah Police Station, I have already written the same a fortnight ago to the Chief Minister of Assam.” Meanwhile, the agitating journalists also criticised the Circle Officer of Katigorah of not even showing the courtesy of meeting them even for once.

Finally, MLA Amarchand Jain said to the OC of Katigorah Police Station, “The actual culprit(s) should be nabbed by Tuesday evening positively. But no innocent person should be harassed in this attempt. I will also talk with the Police Super of Cachar in this regard.” Addressing the Journalists, MLA Jain requested them to give the police administration another 24 hours time to nab the real culprits. He said, “I respect the sentiment of the journalists. I acknowledge that 36 hours have already passed. I further seek 24 hours time from you and assure that the real culprits will be nabbed in the meantime. I request you to withdraw your agitation for the time being.” Finally, on the mediation of the MLA, the journalists agreed to temporarily withdraw the protest demonstration subject to final assurance by the MLA after talking with the Police Super.
