Water from ‘Bisleri’ Kamalpur plant banned for 30 days in Assam, rest 4 plants including Silchar are operational

September 13: In an alarming notification, the Food Safety Commissioner of the Assam Government has prohibited the sale of popular packaged drinking water brand Bisleri in the state with immediate effect. The ban was imposed under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

However, it needs mention here that the Food Safety Department of Assam has shut down the Bisleri plant in Kamalpur and banned the sale of Bisleri mineral packaged drinking water from that plant in the state with immediate effect. It needs mention here that as per reports, the rest four Bisleri plants in Assam including the one at Silchar are still operational and production in those plants have not been banned.

According to section 3 (1) of the Food Safety Standards Act 2006, they have found a large amount of fluoride in the water of this brand which is harmful to health. This notification was released by the Food Department on 12 September. It also stated that the water of this brand was tested as per Regulation 2.10.8 of Food Safety and Standards in which an excessive amount of fluoride has been found.

The Food Safety Department of Assam has asked that particular Bisleri plant to immediately stop the storage, distribution and sale of the product in the markets for a period of 30 days starting immediately.
