January 27: “For getting state government jobs, a candidate should have Assamese as a subject up to class X. Even if an Assamese candidate schooled in English medium, doesn’t have Assamese up to Class X, he/she will be ineligible for state government jobs. We are going to implement this criterion in case of admission into medical and engineering colleges in the state as well.” This was stated by Assam’s reappointed Education Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the press on last Saturday.
On a personal note, the minister asserted that once this decision is implemented, even his own children will not be eligible for any government jobs in Assam as because beings students of institutes outside Assam, they have not studied Assamese language upto Class X.
However, Himanta declared that for Barak Valley and BTAD region, studying Assamese will not be mandatory. In these two regions, in lieu of Assamese, Bengali and Bodo languages needs to be compulsorily studied upto Class X for getting government jobs. Further, Assamese would be made a compulsory subject up to Class-X in the state, barring the BTAD and Barak Valley districts.
