Unsung classical maestro singing in roadside; but who is he?

October 11: A 2 minute 41 seconds video of an old man singing a classical song standing on street-side amidst sounds of moving cars has become viral in social media since last week. Estimated to be of 70 to 80 years of age, the person with unkept gray hair and wearing very simple clothes is singing a classical song invoking Goddess Durga in Raga Basant. It is indeed a feast for the ears. The 2.41 minutes video has captured the heart of millions. Transgressing political borders, the video was applauded by people from even our neighbouring countries. All are listening, admiring and wondering- who is this unknown and unsung talent?

In the video, he is singing before some elderly people and children. After his song ends, the artist spells out his name as Pandit Madanlal Gandharv. Many are comparing his voice with the legendary Late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. The man in the video is using the notes in such a manner that enables to conclude that he is well trained in Indian classical music. The depth and fold of his voice is a real wonder. But the question remains unanswered. Who is he? Where does he stay?

His voice can even give challenge to the established classical singers of the country. Being impressed by the video, renowned artist Shankar Mahadevan in a Facebook post on 10 October, 2019 wrote, “Look at this talent!!! God! What beautiful classical inflexions he is singing! Who is he? #UndiscoveredWithShankar.”

But ending all speculations, a few facebook users have divulged the identity of the great talent while commenting on the post of Shankar Mahadevan. He is identified as Pandit Madanlal Gandharv, who taught music for some time in Delhi. At present he is residing at village Parihara in District Churu (near Ratnagiri) in Rajasthan. Another Facebook user revealed his mobile number (9873207595) and urged upon Shankar Mahadevan to enable the old man with fresh voice to bring him to limelight.

Probably such amazing talents walking down the streets of India is what makes this country incredible!
