ULFA(I) calls for boycott of Republic Day in Assam

January 23: Call to boycott the Republic Day’s celebrations was given by outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) (ULFA-I). The oufit asked all to abstain from Republic Day celebrations.

In a statement issued by Abhijeet Asom, Chairman of the banned group on Thursday, he asked all residents to register their protest against the “colonial rule in Assam.”  However, the emergency services would remain exempted from the boycott, reads the statement.

It needs mention here that the statement issued by ULFA-I comes on the day when 644 miltants including 50 0f that of their own outfit surrendered arms in Guwahati. ULFA (I) is led by fugitive leader Paresh Baruah, whose prime demand is to achieve ‘sovereign status of Assam.’
