৯ জানুয়ারিঃ কেউ বলেন স্বপ্নের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় । কারও দাবি, আন্দোলন করে প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয়েছে গর্বের এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়কে। সেই আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে নাগরিকত্ব বিলের বিরুদ্ধে জোরালো আওয়াজ ওঠে।

সন্ধ্যায় বিভিন্ন ছাত্রাবাসের একদল ছাত্র জমায়েত হন। পরে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নানা দিক ঘুরে আসেন। তাঁদের অভিযোগ, এই বিল অসম ও অসমিয়াদের স্বার্থের পরিপন্থী। এমনকী রাষ্ট্রেরও বোঝা বাড়াচ্ছে। তাই তারা বিলের বিরোধিতা করেন।

এ নিয়েই এই অঞ্চলের সাধারণ মানুষের ক্ষোভ, আন্দোলন করে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠার পরে কী লাভ হল এই অঞ্চলের। নিজেদের ভাষা, কৃষ্টি, সংস্কৃতির কথা বারবার বলা হলেও কাজের ক্ষেত্রে কিছু এগোয়নি। গত কয়েক মাস ধরে চলছে অসমিয়াদের উসকানি, প্রচার। একাংশ মানুষ এই অঞ্চলের ছাত্র সংগঠনগুলির ভূমিকা নিয়েই প্রশ্ন তোলেন।

January 9: Some refer to it as a University of dreams. Others claim that the University is a result of long drawn struggle. People here regard that the establishment of Assam University at Silchar is indeed an emotional matter for the inhabitants of the Barak Valley. In that very University, a strong demand was raised against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 on Wednesday late evening.

At evening, students from different hostels assembled together. With candles in their hand, they went around  the various streets inside the campus and then assembled near the main gate of the varsity. They alleged that the Citizenship Bill is against the interest of Assam and the the ‘Khilanjiyas’ (son of the soil). So the student community of Assam University strongly denounce this bill. They even went to the extent of saying that the Bill is against the secular structure of the constitution and further it will also throw the existence of the Assamese at stake. They declared that it was on these grounds that they denounce the bill.

This incident has led to a strong repercussion among the people of this valley. Many have opined that the university which has been established as a result of a series of struggle has failed to fulfill the wishes and aspirations of the people of this valley. They feel that since the last few months, the jingoist nationalist overtone of the Assamese has given rise to an atmosphere of unrest. These activities are acts of intentional instigation. People even raised the question regarding the role of the students association of this valley in the face of such activities in the university.
