Tinsukia bloodbath: Sit-in-dharna in 3 districts of Barak by Banga Sahitya
November 5: In a shocking incident, five innocent Bengalis were brutally killed by militants at Dhola’s Kherabari area of Tinsukia district in Assam on last Thursday. This inhuman act of violence was criticized and condemned by people throughout the country. A 12-hour bandh was also observed in Assam last Saturday as a mark of protest.
On Monday, Barak Upottaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sanmelan organized a 3-hour sit-in-demonstration in all the three districts of Barak Valley (Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi). Not only the members of Banga Sahitya but other members of the civil society in all the three districts also participated in this demonstration.
Speaking during the occasion, all vehemently criticized the act of barbarism exhibited at Tinsukia. Demand was raised to nab the real culprits. Further, speakers also urged upon the government through a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister of the state to provide security to the linguistic minorities of Assam. At Karimganj, numerious placards were displayed at the site of the demonstration, wherein the demands were written down.
At the end of the demonstration, a memorandum specifying the demands was sent to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner. At Silchar, the memorandum was handed over to Dr. S .Lakhsmanan for onward transmission to the CM.
It needs mention here that initially ULFA(I) was held responsible for the killings. However, in an open letter ULFA(I) denied its involvement in this crime against humanity.
