Sunil Arora new Chief Election Commissioner to take charge on 2 December

২৭ নভেম্বর : দেশের পরবর্তী মুখ্য নির্বাচন কমিশনার হচ্ছেন সুনীল অরোরা। রাষ্ট্রপতি রামনাথ কোবিন্দ বর্তমানে দেশের এই বরিষ্ঠ নির্বাচন কমিশনারের নাম পরবর্তী মুখ্য নির্বাচন হিসেবে ঘোষণা করেন। ৬২ বর্ষীয় অরোরা আগামী ২ ডিসেম্বর বিদায়ী মুখ্য নির্বাচন কমিশনার ওপি রাওয়াতের কাছ থেকে দায়িত্ব নেবেন। রাজস্থানের ১৯৮০ ব্যাচের আইএএস অফিসার অরোরা গত বছরের সেপ্টেম্বরে নির্বাচন কমিশনে নিয়োগ পান। তবে তিনি এমন একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময়ে মুখ্য নির্বাচন কমিশনারের দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করছেন, যখন ২০১৯-এর প্রথম ভাগে লোকসভা নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হবে।

নির্বাচন কমিশনে যোগদানের আগে সুনীল অরোরা কয়েকটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদে দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন। এর মধ্যে অন্যতম তথ্য ও সম্প্রচার মন্ত্রক এবং দক্ষতা বিকাশ ও প্রশিক্ষণ বিভাগের সচিব পদে কিছুদিন কাজ করা। এছাড়াও তিনি অর্থ, বস্ত্র ও প্ল্যানিং কমিশনেও কাজ করেছেন। ১৯৯৯ থেকে ২০০০ সাল পর্যন্ত তিনি অসামরিক বিমান সরবরাহ মন্ত্রকের যুগ্ম সচিব পদে ছিলেন। ৫ বছর ইন্ডিয়ান এয়ারলাইন্সে সিএমডি পদেও তিনি দায়িত্ব সামলান।

November 26: President Ran Nath Kobind cleared the appointment of Sunil Arora, the senior-most Election Commissioner as the new Chief Election Commissioner of India. The 62 year old Arora will take over the charge from O.P. Rawat on 2 December. A 1980 batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Arora was appointed to the election body in September last year. His appointment to this crucial post comes at a time when India will witness the Lok Sabha polls in the first half of 2019.

Before joining the election commission, Sunil Arora has served in some key positions which include Information and Broadcasting Secretary, and Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Mr Arora has worked in ministries and departments such as Finance, Textiles and Planning Commission. He also served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation during 1999-2002 and CMD, Indian Airlines for five years
