It needs mention here that the film “In Spite of the Fence” was also screened at Gurucharan College (G.C.College), Silchar (Assam) in September 2019 in presence of the college teachers, students, cine lovers and cultural activists from across the town. The audience was also spell bound by the way the stark reality was depicted in the documentary.
The film has indeed a connection with Barak Valley. The documentary is the saga of a village Mahadevpur in Katigorah which got segregated in 2011 after the erection of the fence along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The film had a humane touch wherein the villagers were depicted to suffer tremendously though they were not a party to the tragic partition. Subimal Bhattacharjee said, “In general terms, a fence would not have any special connotation for ordinary masses, but for the people of Barak Valley, fence or partition is nothing sort of a nightmare. The victims of partition knows where it infact hurts.”
He made this film with active cooperation of the Border Security Force (BSF). The fence which symbolised tragic separation was internalised by Mr. Bhattacharjee as he went around the area couple of times in order that the documentary could project only the stark reality. Speaking to way2barak over telephone, Subimal Bhattacharjee said, “It’s indeed a matter of utter misfortune that inspite of millions were displaced during the partition, yet this geographical theater of partition of Surma-Barak is an event which is even neglected in partition historiography. This documentary is made with the prime objective of bringing forth the pangs of sufferings of the people of this region due to partition.”
