September 20: It is usually believed that those in the world of cyber security are so immersed into the subject that it’s hard for them to be culturally awakened. However, this stereotype belief was negated by none another than the renowned cyber security expert Subimal Bhattacharjee. He is more involved in the arena of art and culture as that of cyber issues. He walked an extra mile to make a unique documentary to highlight the miserable plight of those who are torn apart by the fence demarcating geographical boundary between nations.

On Friday, Subimal Bhattacharjee’s documentary “Inspite of the Fence” was screened at Gurucharan College (G.C.College), Silchar in presence of the college teachers, students, cine lovers and cultural activists from across the town. He was accompanied by his wife Joyeeta Bhattacharjee, who too is an acclaimed writer and socio-cultural activist. The screening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Bivash Deb, Principal of G.C. College.

In his speech, Mr. Bhattacharjee narrated what went into making of the documentary. The documentary is the saga of a village Mahadevpur in Katigorah which got segregated in 2011 after the erection of the fence along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The film had a humane touch wherein the villagers were depicted to suffer tremendously though they were not a party to the tragic partition. He said, “In general terms, a fence would not have any special connotation for ordinary masses, but for the people of Barak Valley, fence or partition is nothing sort of a nightmare. The victims of partition knows where it infact hurts.”

He made this film with active cooperation of the Border Security Force (BSF). The fence which symbolised tragic separation was internalised by Mr. Bhattacharjee as he went around the area couple of times in order that the documentary could project only the stark reality. Later on speaking to way2barak, Subimal Bhattacharjee said, “It’s indeed a matter of utter misfortune that inspite of millions were displaced during the partition, yet this geographical theater of partition of Surma-Barak is an event which is even neglected in partition historiography. This documentary is made with the prime objective of bringing forth the pangs of sufferings of the people of this region due to partition.”

The audience was also spell bound by the way the stark reality was depicted in the documentary. Commenting on the film, teacher & cultural activist Dipak Sengupta commented in a social media post wherein he lavishly praised Mr. Bhattacharjee and wrote. “His effort of making the film was indeed successful.”
