Students of Barak Valley Engineering College sits for dharna for lack of basic facilities
October 15: Students of Barak Valley Engineering College (BVEC), Nirala, Karimganj boycotted their class and sat for protest demonstration near the main gate of their college. The main cause of the protest by the students is the lack of basic infrastructural facilities. On Tuesday morning, the students closed the main gate of the college and sat down raising slogans in support of their demands.
Speaking to newsmen, a student of the college said, “There is lack of proper drinking water in the campus. The water which is available here contains huge amount of iron and other impurities, the consumption of which has led to a number of water born diseases. We have approached the college authorities time and again. We also appealed to the local authorities, but of no avail. Finding no other alternative, we have sat for protest demonstration today.”
Another student raised the issue of irregular power supply in the college. She said, “Many times, electric supply gets snapped for 2 to 3 days at a stretch. As a result, we cannot study properly. As students of engineering college, supply of power is essential for the practical laboratories. There seems to be none to take care of this major issue.”
Further, they also protested against the poor library facility in the college. The college library lacks even basic books, leave aside other reference books. Students alleged that they become bound to purchase books online, the cost of which are very high.
They also alleged that off and on they approach the college authorities who cites lack of funds for non-availability of basic facilities. The agitating students said that the college is run by the Assam Government but the facilities are very poor. One of the students said, “We have even approached DC Karimganj, Director of Technical Education- Government of Assam and local politicians. All gives us assurances but nothing fruitful actually happens. Today we have become bound to sit for protest demonstration. We want proper response from the state government and the Director of Technical Education.”
