St. Capitanio School Silchar qualifies for CBSE National Chess

October 2: The chess team of St. Capitanio Senior Secondary, Silchar has qualified for the Under-14 Girls’ Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) National level Chess Tournament. In the debut appearance itself, the team won second prize in the (CBSE) Far East Zone. CBSE Far East Zone includes West Bengal, Orissa, and Chhattisgarh in addition to the eight states of North East India.

Lead by team captain Shuktara Samkalpa, the 3-member team including Ruptalin Teronpi, and Jaysmita Dutta will now play with the other winners and runner up of the nine different CBSE Zones to be held in Delhi this November. In the four board tournament, St. Capitanio team played with three players, and thus started one match down in every round, and in National Level also they have to continue with this disadvantage. Saturday, evening, Chief Arbiter Mr P. K. Roy and Dr. Sangeeta Chatterjee, Principal, Guwahati Public School handed over the trophy to the Runner up team-members, who were all hurrying back to Silchar for participating in a local tournament on Sunday.

Laxmipat Singhania Academy (LSA) of Kolkata secured the first position in the Far East Zone with their tally being six points winning all three rounds straightaway. St. Capitanio Silchar, the Runners up team, secured four points, losing only to LSA in the third round. Last year Runners up Sai International School of Bhubaneswar and the Delhi Public School (DPS), Guwahati who shared points amongst them in their third round, and lost against LSA and St Capitanio respectively in the second round, both ended their journey with three points each.

Teams from six schools participated in the Zonal U-14 Girls’ Chess Competition held at Guwahati Public School premises during 25 to 28 September.  Manager of the Runner up team said that Sister Arpita K, Principal of St. Capitanio herself was monitoring the participation of the chess team on a day to day basis. She also extended special thanks to veteran Chess players Monoj Das, Nirmalya Chakraborty and Ravikant Tewari for their inspiring role behind this performance of the school.

Sister Arpita K felicitated the Team members on return in School Assembly and said that she is hopeful that in the coming years, the school will have more organised representation in CBSE games. Honorary General Secretary of All Assam Chess Association Rajib Dhar also congratulated the St, Capitanio Team.
