Smuggled timber worth ₹ 20 lakh seized at Cachar, 4 arrested
August 7: Acting on specific information, Cachar Forest Division officials apprehended three trucks loaded with teak timber. The trucks full of timber entered Cachar from Mizoram. All the tree trucks contained smuggled teak. Acting swiftly, the trucks were stopped and four persons were arrested on Wednesday at around 2 in the afternoon at Nutan Bazaar under Dholai of Cachar district.
The trucks were carrying 1250 pieces of illegal teak. The market value of the timber is estimated to be ₹ 20 lakh. The arrested persons were produced in the court and were then send to judicial custody. Concerned citizens have expressed anguish as to how some scrupulous persons were illegally cutting precious trees and selling them at exorbitant prices ignoring the threat to environment.
