January 18: A delegation of Silchar District Congress Committee (DCC) led by its President Pradip Kumar Dey visited Panchgram Paper Mill Township Premises and interacted with the employees and their children. The employees of the two paper mills at Nagaon and Panchgram are without their salaries since the last 36 months. The children of the employees due to poverty came to the streets to beg money in the last month.

Many individuals and some local organisations have come forward to help the children of the employees in their studies. Recently, the state government declared to give money to the children of the employees to pursue their studies. However, the debt ridden employees need more money to sustain themselves.

On Saturday, the Congress delegation collected an amount of ₹ 1 lakh from all DCC office bearers of Cachar and donated the same to the children of Cachar Paper Mill employees for meeting their various expenses.

The delegation comprised of former MP & Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev, MLA Rajdeep Goala, former MLA Ajit Singh, Babul Hore, APCC Secretary Sanjeeb Roy among others.

Expressing her views, Susmita Dev wrote, “We collected an amount of 1 lac from all DCC office bearers of Cachar and donated to the children of Cachar Paper Mill employees who are without salary for over 3 years. This money is for their education. They need about 26 lacs to pay their dues. The one time payment from Assam govt. is not enough they say. They need a permanent solution. Why is the government not releasing their PF which is their money.”
