Section 144 imposed in Hailakandi

October 21: Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Keerthi Jalli on 21 October, 2019 imposed Section 144 in the entire district of Hailakandi with immediate effect. The order will remain in force until further orders.

Section 144 of CrPC was imposed over apprehensions of breach of public peace and tranquility by the district administration of Hailakandi. It was further stated in the order that anyone violating it will be punished under various provisions of the IPC.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973 authorises the Executive Magistrate of any state or territory to issue an order to prohibit the assembly of four or more people in an area. According to the law, every member of such ‘unlawful assembly’ can be booked for engaging in rioting. Section 144 is imposed in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger of some event that has the potential to cause trouble or damage to human life or property. Section 144 of CrPC generally prohibits public gathering.

Following some reports regarding miscreants at Ainakhal, Monacherra gaon panchayats & areas adjoining Lala may indulge in violence and creation of communal tension, the decision to impose Section 144 was taken.
