Renovate the station retaining its heritage, says Samiti to GM NEF Railway

৩০ নভেম্বর : বহুভাষিক লোকসংস্কৃতির বিভিন্ন শিল্পকর্মের মাধ্যমে শিলচর রেল স্টেশনের সৌন্দর্যায়নের দাবিতে উত্তর-পূর্ব সীমান্ত রেলের জেনারেল ম্যানেজারকে স্মারকপত্র দিল ভাষা শহীদ স্টেশন শহীদ স্মরণ সমিতি। শুক্রবার সন্ধ্যায় সমিতির এক প্রতিনিধিদল এ নিয়ে জেনারেল ম্যানেজার সঞ্জীব রায়ের সঙ্গে দেখা করে।

ম্যানেজারের হাতে স্মারকপত্র তুলে দিয়ে সমিতি উল্লেখ করেছে, শিলচর রেল স্টেশনের প্রবেশমুখে থাকা গম্বুজটি কাছাড়ের ঐতিহাসিক ডিমাসা রাজার শিল্পবোধে তৈরি করা হয়েছিল। কিন্তু ২০০৭ সালে গম্বুজটিতে ফাটল ধরায় রেল কর্তৃপক্ষ সংস্কারের নামে তার উপর টিন লাগিয়ে দেয়। কিন্তু তখন থেকে এ পর্যন্ত গম্বুজটি সংস্কারের কাজ আর এগোয়নি।

সমিতি আরও বলেছে, ব্রডগেজ আসার পর ত্রিপুরায় বেশ কয়েকটি নতুন স্টেশন তৈরি করা হলেও সেগুলোতে স্থানীয় ইতিহাস ও শিল্পকর্মকে গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে। তাছাড়া অন্য কয়েকটি পুরনো স্টেশনের ভোল পাল্টাতে গিয়েও স্থানীয় ইতিহাসকে সম্মান জানানো হয়েছে। কিন্তু শিলচরের ক্ষেত্রে তা হয়নি বলে প্রতিনিধিরা আক্ষেপ ব্যক্ত করেন।

তারা দাবি জানান, কাছাড়ের ঐতিহাসিক ডিমাসা রাজবাড়ির আদলে নির্মিত গম্বুজ সহ এ অঞ্চলের ভাষা সংগ্রামের ইতিহাস, চা বাগান এবং বহুভাষিক লোকসংস্কৃতির বিভিন্ন শিল্পকর্মের মাধ্যমে অতিসত্বর শিলচর স্টেশনের সৌন্দর্যায়ন প্রকল্প ঘোষণা করা হোক। জিএম সমিতির এই দাবির প্রতি সহমত ব্যক্ত করে খুব শীঘ্রই বিষয়টি বাস্তবায়নের প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন। স্মারকপত্র দেওয়ার সময় সমিতির পক্ষে ছিলেন সভাপতি বাবুল হোড়, সাধারণ সম্পাদক রাজীব কর, স্বপন দাসগুপ্ত, জীমূতলাল বর্মন, প্রসেনজিৎ বর্মন প্রমুখ।

November 30: A strong demand was raised by the Bhasha Shahid Station Shahid Smaran Samiti to renovate Silchar railway station by retaining the symbols of culture and heritage of the district. In this regard, a memorandum was given to Sanjiv Roy, General Manager (GM) of North East Frontier (NEF) Railway on Friday. It has been learnt that the GM gave the delegation a patient hearing and assured to fulfill their demand at the earliest.

It needs mention here that a similar memorandum was also given to the Divisional Manager of NEF Railway on 29 September through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar. However, the members of the Samiti lamented that no action was taken by the railways in this regard.

It was stated in the memorandum that a locality is known by its history & cultural heritage and the same is visualized through some symbol. Every locality tries to display its history and culture by erecting such symbols in the important places. Railway Station is an entry point for the tourists and hence such depictions over there is definitely a culturally loaded category.

Barak Valley represents a unique feature of ‘unity in diversity’ in its historical and cultural perspective represented through the symbol of the architectural pattern of the Kachari Kingdom. Previously, the architectural pattern in the entry of the station represented the unique style of the Kachari rulers. But later, in 2007, cracks occurred on the dome, so it was just covered temporarily with CI sheet (tin), blatantly ignoring the opposition of the Samiti. But the irony of the matter lies in the fact that the temporal arrangement made in 2007 is still continuing in 2018. The members of the Samiti expressed the view that the Railway authorities are aware of this matter.

It was further stated in the said memorandum that, as Railway station is the gateway to a particular locality, it should communicate its history and culture. A discerning eye would reveal that in every part of the globe, the station is designed keeping in view the cultural traits of the locality. It is in this backdrop that they demanded to restore the earlier dome which was a witness to the Kachari style of architecture. Further, they also raised the demand of decorating Silchar Railway Station with various artifacts which are unique to this particular place. This they referred to as a matter of the identity of the people of the valley.

Apart from The President of the Samiti Babul Hore and Secretary Dr. Rajib Kar, others who were also present during the submission of the memorandum were—Swapan Dasgupta, Amitabh Dey, Jimut Lal Barman, Prasenjit Jidung Barman and others.
