- 23 March, 1857: Inventor and Elevator Industrialist Elisha Otis installs his 1st elevator at 488 Broadway in New York City.
- 23 March, 1903: The Wright brothers 1st file a patent for a flying machine, which is granted 3 years later.
- 23 March, 1910: Birth anniversary of Indian politician Ram Manohar Lohia who was one of the tallest socialist leaders and an active participant in the Indian freedom struggle.
- 23 March, 1919: Birth anniversary of Indian politician and freedom fighters Subhadra Joshi who took active part in the Quit India Movement in 1942. Post independence she served in the Indian Parliament for four terms. She was awarded with the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Puraskar as well.
- 23 March, 1919: 8th Congress of the Russian Communist Party re-establishes a five-member Politburo which becomes the center of political power in the Soviet Union. Original members Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Joseph Stalin, Lev Kamenev and Nikolai Krestinsky,
- 23 March, 1933: Death anniversary of Indian revolutionaries Sardar Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru who were hung by the British government on this day as a part of death sentence that the government had given them due to their participation in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. The initial date set for the execution was 24th March but it was moved 11 hours earlier. In fact the British government cremated the bodies of Indian revolutionaries outside the Jail secretly and threw the Ashes in the Sutlej river without handing it over to their families also.

- 23 March, 2000: Death anniversary of Indian hockey Legend Udham Singh. Udham Singh Kular known as Udham Singh originally from Sansarpur, Jalandhar, Punjab, India had played 1952 Summer Olympics Helsinki, 1956 Summer Olympics Melbourne, 1960 Summer Olympics Rome and 1964 Summer Olympics Tokyo as a member of Indian Hockey team and won three gold and a silver medals. For his contribution to sports, Indian government awarded him with the Arjuna Award.
