March 18: Here are the major events that occurred on 18 March….

  • 18 March, 1766: Britain repeals the Stamp Act, which had caused outrage in colonial America and helped lead to the American Revolution.
  • 18 March, 1802: The Ordnance Factories’ Day is observed on 18th of March every year. The production of India’s oldest Ordnance Factory, which is at Cossipore of Kolkata, was started in 18th of March, 1802. The day is celebrated by displaying the rifles, guns, artillery, ammunition..etc in exhibitions all over India. The celebrations starts with a parade and the exhibition will also display the photographs of various mountaineering expeditions.
  • 18 March, 1890: German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck resigns after 19 years after disagreement with German Emperor Wilhelm II.
  • 18 March, 1918: The infamous Rowlatt Act was passed on this day. The act gave indefinite powers to the British government where they could incarcerate anyone for a period of 2 years without any trial. This was enacted by the British government to deal with Indian revolutionaries who are a part of the Indian freedom struggle. The act also called upon reducing the freedom of press and extending the emergency measures for a longer period of time.
  • 18 March, 1922: Mahatma Gandhi was sentenced to prison in India for civil disobedience after calling for mass civil disobedience which included boycotting British educational institutions and law courts, not working for the British controlled government and the boycott of foreign-made goods, especially British goods. He was sentenced to 6 years but released after 2 years.
  • 18 March, 1938: Birth anniversary of Indian actor and producer Shashi Kapoor. His real name was Balbir Prithviraj Kapoor. He was born in one of the most notable families in Indian film industry. He acted in more than 150 films including several movies in English language as well. His most notable film in English language was 4th Merchant Ivory. He received several awards for his contribution to Indian cinema including the Dada Saheb Phalke award and Padma Bhushan.
  • 18 March, 1940: Hitler and Mussolini meet at the Brenner Pass and agree to fight together in war against France and Britain.
  • 18 March, 1948: Battle Birth anniversary of Indian cricketer Eknath Solkar- an Indian all rounder who represented his Country in 27 test matches. He was also known for his fielding closer to the wickets.
  • 18 March, 1965: A Soviet cosmonaut known as Lt. Col. Alexei Leonov exited the spacecraft Voskshod II for a short “spin”. He completed a somersault, and then proceeded to take pictures of space. This took place just days before the U.S. planned to launch its first two-man spaceship and becomes the first man to walk in space.
  • 18 March, 1989: In Egypt, a 4,400-year-old mummy is found in the Pyramid of Cheops.
  • 18 March, 2013: 98 people are killed and 248 are injured across Iraq from a series of bombings and shootings
