March 16: Here are the major events that occurred on 16 March….

  • 16 March, 1527: Battle of Khanua: Mughal Emperor Babur defeats Rajput forces led by Rana Sanga consolidating Mughal power.
  • 16 March, 1559: Birth anniversary of Maharana Amar Singh 1- He was the eldest son and the successor to Maharana Pratap. He was the 13th Rana of the Mewar dynasty and came to power after the death of his father. His capital was the city of Udaipur. He was very popular in his Kingdom due to his bravery and care for his populace. He kept up the struggle that his father had initiated against the Mughals for a long time but later entered into a peace treaty with them so that the financial and manpower damage that was happening to Mewar could be minimized.
  • 16 March, 1910: Birth anniversary of Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi- He was the eighth Nawab of the state of Pataudi and actually let the Indian cricket team during their English tour of 1946. Later his son Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi also became the captain of Indian cricket team.
  • 16 March, 1928: C.V. Raman announced his discovery of ”new radiation” to an assembly of scientists at Bangalore.
  • 16 March, 1935: Adolf Hitler violates the Treaty of Versailles by introducing compulsory military conscription in Germany and rebuilding German armed forces. This included a new Navy (Kriegsmarine), the first full armored divisions (Panzerwaffe) and an Air Force (Luftwaffe).
  • 16 March, 1939: Subroto Mukherjee became the first Indian Officer to command a squadron when he took over No.1.
  • 16 March, 1945: Death anniversary of Indian Revolutionary and freedom fighter Ganesh Damodar Savarkar. He was the eldest of Savarkar brothers and led an armed Revolt against the British government. For his participation in the Indian freedom struggle he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He is also credited with founding the Abhinav Bharat Society.
  • 16 March, 1946: India calls Clement Attlee’s independence offer contradictory, ‘a propaganda move’.
  • 16 March, 2012: Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar becomes first cricketer to score 100 international centuries
  • 16 March, 2013: An elected government completed a full term for the first time in the Pakistan’s history. Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf’s government was the first to complete a full term since the country’s formation in 1947.
  • 16 March, 2019: Beached dead whale found to have 88 pounds of plastic inside it, including 40 pounds of plastic bags, in Mabini , Philippines.
