April 16: Here are the major events that occurred on 16 April….

  • 16 April, 1853: The first Railway Train on Indian sub-continent ran over a streach of 21 miles i.e. 35 kms from Bombay to Thane. In the inauguration ceremony, 14 railway carriages carrying about 400 guests left Bori Bunder (presently C.S.T.) at 3.30 pm, amidst the loud applause of a vast multitude and to the salute of 21 guns.
  • 16 April, 1862: Slavery abolished in District of Columbia.

  • 16 April, 1903: Kalka-Simla Railway line section was opened for public conveyance.
  • 16 April, 1917: Lenin arrives back from exile in Russia at Finland Station, Petrograd to join the Russian Revolution.
  • 16 April, 1939: The Soviet Union proposes an alliance with Britain and France to counter Nazi Germany; the Soviets would later sign a secret agreement with the Nazis.
  • 16 April, 1953: Lalita Pawar, famous actress of Indian film industry, was born.

  • 16 April, 1959: Raurkela Iron Project’s first furnace started functioning.
  • 16 April, 1962: Third Lok Sabha was constituted after third general election. Congress party won the majority and  Jawaharlal Nehru became the prime minister.
  • 16 April, 1966: Nandalal Bose, an influential Indian painter belonging to the Bengal School of Art died on this day.

  • 16 April, 1974: Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was an Indian philosopher, academic, and statesman who served as the first Vice President of India and the second President of India died on this day.
  • 16 April, 1976: The govt. announces its new birth-control program to curb population growth.
  • 16 April, 1997: Govt. orders foreign and domestic airlines to install air safety systems by the end of 1998. Aircraft with more than 30 seats that do not have Airborne Collision Avoidance System and transponders not to be allowed into Indian airspace from 1/1/99.

  • 16 April, 2008: “Spider-Man 3” directed by Sam Raimi and starring Toby Maguire and Kristen Dunst premieres at the Tokyo Film Festival.
  • 16 April, 2017: World record for gathering of Charlie Chaplin lookalikes – 662 at Manoir de Ban, Chaplin museum in Vevey, Switzerland.
