March 1: Here are the major events that occurred on 1 March….

  • 1 March, 1498: Vasco da Gama landed at what is now Mozambique on his way to India.
  • 1 March, 1776: Purandhar Treaty was signed between Marathas and British Army. After death of Madhavrao Peshwa, his brother Narayanrao became Peshwa. His uncle had his nephew assassinated although he was not the legal heir. Narayanrao’s widow, gave birth to a son who was named Sawai Madhavrao. Nana Phadnavis tried to name the infant as the new Peshwa and rule under him. Raghunathrao sought help from British and signed Treaty of Surat. British promised to give him 2,500 soldiers but the British Calcutta Council condemned the Treaty and annulled it. The Treaty of Purandhar (1 March 1776) annulled the Surat treaty.
  • 1 March, 1903: Birth anniversary of Pareshchandra Bhattacharya, former Governer of Indian Reserve Bank. He opposed the nationalising of private banks in India and reduced the size of the currency notes for economic reasons. Industrial Development Bank of India & Unit Trust of India were established during his tenure.
  • 1 March, 1941: Nashville, Tennessee becomes the home of the very first FM radio station in the country. While the FM band had less static and more range, it didn’t become popular until the early 1960s.
  • 1 March, 1945: US President Franklin D. Roosevelt announces success of Yalta Conference. It was the Conference of the Big Three at Yalta- Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin.
  • 1 March, 1954: The United States announced that it had conducted a hydrogen bomb test on the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. It was the first U.S. test of a dry fuel hydrogen bomb under Operation Castle.
  • 1 March, 1962: Pakistan announced that it had a new constitution that set up a presidential system of government.
  • 1 March, 1977: Bank of America adopts the name VISA for its credit cards.
  • 1 March, 1978: The coffin of Charlie Chaplin was stolen from a small, unguarded village cemetery in Switzerland.
  • 1 March, 1994: A renowned producer and director of Hindi films, Manmohan Desai died on this day at the age of 57.
