Protest meeting near Khudiram statue on Friday over arrests made for participating in bandh after demise of Molin

November 21: The untimely demise of photo journalist Molin Sharma in a tragic road mishap was a harsh incident which shook the hearts of a huge multitude of people. Dissatisfaction cropped up among the people regarding the faulty traffic management system prevailing at Silchar.

In a press release issued by some members of the civil society on Thursday, it was stated that this dissatisfaction which took birth among the people gave birth to a spontaneous call for Silchar bandh on 30 July, 2019. The release further stated that after the bandh became successful, case was filed intentionally against the activists who convened it. After 4 months of this incident, Prashanta Bhattacharjee, one of the leading supporter of that bandh, who also happens to be a cultural activist and prime force behind students’ movement was arrested on Wednesday from near the main gate of Assam University.

It was alleged in the release that though police arrested Prashanta Bhattacharjee, but they failed to apprehend those who were responsible for the death of Molin Sharma. It is in this backdrop of “crushing the backbone of democracy by arresting those involved in social movement” that a protest meeting has been convened near the Khudiram statue, Silchar on Friday at 4 PM. The organisers of this protest meeting has appealed to all sections of the populace for their participation.

The organisers of this protest meeting who issued the press release are Sadhan Purkayastha, Biswajit Das, Prof. Ajoy Roy, Dr. Rajib Kar, Santanu Paul, Subrata Roy and Kamal Chakraborty.
