Orthopaedic surgeon Dr S.K. Nandi Purkayastha gets ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’

June 18: It’s indeed a proud moment for Barak Valley as eminent orthopaedic surgeon Dr. S.K. Nandi Purkayastha was conferred ‘Lifetime Achievement Award, 2019’ by Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences.

Dr. S.K. Nandi Purkayastha did his MBBS from Guahati Medical College and Hospital in 1965.  He then joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as a post-graduate trainee. He successfully qualified Master of Surgery in 1969.  He started his professional career at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in 1970 as a Registrar.

It was Dr. Nandi Purkayastha who by his non-stop zeal started the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at SMCH in 1973. He later became the Head of Department, Orthopaedics in 1987 and worked there till his retirement. He also worked in the position of Vice-Principal cum additional chief superintendent of SMCH.  He finally became the Principal cum chief superintendent of Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

In a social media post, Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy congratulated Dr. Nandi Purkayastha on his achievement and wrote, “It is a personal moment of pride for me not just because he is my guru but he has been a person whom I used to idolise as a student of the subject. Congratulations Sir ! May God give you long life !”
