Orientation of police personals on ‘Mental Health’ organised at Silchar
March 4: The Health & Family Welfare Department organized a one day orientation of the police personals on Mental Health on Monday at the Conference Hall of S.P. Office, Silchar. The orientation programme was inaugurated by Manabendra Deb Roy, Superintendent of Police in presence of Dr. Sudip Jyoti Das, Joint Director of Health Services, Suman Choudhury, District Media Expert, NHM.
In his inaugural speech, Police Super Manabendra Deb Roy, emphasized on mental well-being of police personals. He also urged that the police personals should be sensitive enough while dealing with the cases of mental illness.
Dr. S.J. Das, Joint Director of Health Services informed that as per Mental Healthcare Act 2017, any person with suspected mental illness detained by police should be produced in government hospital for medical check-up, within 24 hours of detention. No doctor can deny treatment of such patients and the cost of treatment should be borne by the hospital authority.
Dr. Rajbardhan Narayan, Psychiatrist, S.M. Dev Civil Hospital was the Resource Person of the orientation programme. He gave a detailed presentation on different aspect of mental illness. He also discussed legal provisions related to mental health patients.
A total of thirty police inspectors participated in the orientation and shared their practical experiences. The programme was coordinated by Mausumi Roy Bhowmick, Finance and Logistic Consultant, NHM.
