New Assam Bhawan inaugurated in Kolkata by Sarbananda Sonowal
February 16: An Additional Assam Bhawan and Trade Centre cum Youth Hostel was inaugurated by state Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday at Salt Lake, Sector III in Kolkata in presence of state Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Silchar MP Dr. rajdeep Roy also graced the occasion. The new building of Assam Bhawan in Kolkata was completed within record time. The new construction was undertaken by Assam PWD. This new building was constructed at an expense of Rs 20.65 crore.
Taking to his twitter handle, Dr. Sarma wrote, “Assam always had a close bonding with West Bengal. Over years, we’ve seen increased movement b/w 2 states. Glad that we’ve built another Assam Bhawan & a Trade Centre worth Rs 25.18 crore in Kolkata that shall cater to needs of many. Joined HCM @sarbanandsonwal in its inauguration.”

The eleven storied new building is built with modern amenities and air conditioning and it has 35 rooms and dormitories separately for men and women. In his speech CM Sonowal said that the new Assam Bhawan would strengthen relations between the people of Assam and West Bengal. It will also help promote trade activities between the two states.
It needs mention here that Assam Houses are already there in New Delhi and Chennai. Two more at Vellore and Bengaluru would be opened soon, whereas a new one will be built at Dwarka in New Delhi and another new building at Kolkata by demolishing the old one located at Russel Street.

On the same day, Sonowal also unveiled a statue of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa at the Old Assam House, Kolkata. It was installed at a cost of ₹ 20 lakh by PWD (H). The statue will be a proud monument of Assam signifying the immortal journey of our language and culture, said the Chief Minister.
