January 04: Normal banking services at branches and ATMs are likely to get affected on Wednesday, as a result of the bank strike on 8 January, 2020 called by six employee unions — AIBEA, AIBOA, BEFI, INBEF, INBOC and BKSM.  Six bank unions will go on strike to show their support for the central trade unions’ strike call on the same day.

All India Bank Employees Union (AIBEA). AIBEA general secretary CH Venkatachalam said, “In the banking sector, we find that the government’s policy is privatisation and unwarranted merger of banks despite our vehement protests. On the other hand, the main issue of recovery of corporate bad loans is being ignored and concessions are being given to them while service charges are increased for the common people.”

Net banking services like NEFT, IMPS and RTGS transfers will, however, not be affected.  In a notification to the stock exchanges, State Bank of India (SBI) said that it has been informed about the strike by the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). SBI said membership of its employees in these unions is very few, so the impact of the strike on the bank’s operations will be minimal.

Soumya Datta, All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) General Secretary has asked members to not demand nor accept any keys and not perform any clerical duties on the day of the strike.
