MLA Kamalakhya distribute books, copies among children of paper mill employees, gives financial assistance

January 07: Cachar Paper Mill and Nagaon Paper Mill run by Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL) have been non-functional since 20 October 2015 and 13 March 2017 respectively. The employees of the two mills have not received salaries for the past 35 and 33 months. The children of the employees became compelled to give up their studies. The abandoned mills and its employees are now left at the mercy of none.

It is in the backdrop of this gloomy scenario that MLA of North Karimganj, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha visited HPC, Cachar Paper Mill, Township at Panchgram on Tuesday. MLA Dey Purkayastha met with the family members of the mill employees. He also interacted with the children of the employees who used to study in school but had to give up studies due to financial crisis. The MLA said that after a video showing the children begging for materials went viral, he was hurt seeing the video and rushed to the children for help.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha interacted with these students and distributed books, copies, pencils etc among them. He also extended a financial help of Rs. 10,000 to the body which runs a school in the Township. Interacting with the mill employees, MLA North Karimganj assured them to raise the miserable plight of the HPC employees and their children in the Assam Legislative Assembly. The Paper Mill employees also extended thanks to the MLA for his kind gesture.

Till now, around 55 employees of the mills have died due to poverty out of which some have even committed suicide. The last one to die was 55 year old Engineer Biswajit Mazumder, an engineer of Nagaon Paper Mill, who committed suicide on 29 April, 2019. One of the employee said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with many BJP leaders gave us multiple assurances of reviving the two paper mills but all their words were blank promises.”
