Mercury dips due to heavy rain, Wednesday to be same

December 18: Rain accompanied by cold winds on Tuesday brought the winter chill to almost every part of Northeast India including Assam. The Met department has forecast similar weather for at least two more days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the sudden change in weather in Assam was caused as an aftermath of cyclone ‘Phethai’ which swept through Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The Met department has forecast a cloudy Wednesday with rain accompanied by cold winds in entire Barak Valley.

At Silchar, the average minimum temperature on Tuesday as per IMD was 16 degrees Celsius. As per weather forecast, the average minimum temperature is expected to go down to 15 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The weather will generally be cloudy with light rain till Thursday.

“It has been raining at Silchar since early morning. The rain stopped for some time in the afternoon, but it started drizzling again. The weather has all of a sudden turned cold,” Sudip, a 28-year-old Bank employee from Hailakandi, told way2barak.

“The constant rain since morning has brought down the temperature here. I had to put on my sweater even during the day to overcome the chill,” said Partha Pratim Chanda (Piku), a businessman from Silchar, who, however, said he was enjoying the sudden change.
