MC Mary Kom nominated for BBC Sportswoman of the Year

February 3: In a rare instance of prestige, boxing great six-time world champion Padma Vibhushan MC Mary Com has been nominated for the inaugural BBC Indian sportswoman of the year award. Star wrestler Vinesh Phogat, badminton queen PV Sindhu, Sprinter Dutee Chand and para-badminton player Manasi Joshi are the other nominees for the award, the winner of which will be announced on 8 March.

The winner will be decided on the basis of public voting, which will be open till 18 February on six BBC vernacular websites. Rupa Jha, the Head of BBC Indian languages said, “In sports, women’s journey is comparatively tougher than their male counterparts, so they thought of honouring their achievements.”
