Mass support for Citizenship Bill in Assam University, offers tribute to 11 language martyrs

১০ জানুয়ারিঃ উদ্বাস্তুদের নাগরিকত্ব ইস্যুতে বুধবারের মশাল মিছিলের পাল্টা জবাব দিল আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বঙ্গভাষী পড়ুয়ারা। বৃহস্পতিবার তারা বিশাল সংখ্যায় জমায়েত হয় মূল ফটকের সামনে।

ব্যানার তুলে ধরেন ভারতীয় বাঙালি হিসেবে গর্বিত বলে উল্লেখ করে। অনেক ব্যানারে লেখা ছিল, আমার ভাষা বাংলা ভাষা। পেছনে বিরাট সাইজের ব্যানার, নাগরিকত্ব বিলকে আমরা সমর্থন করি। তাঁরা আধিপত্যবাদীদের বিরুদ্ধে ঘন ঘন স্লোগান তোলেন। একাদশ ভাষা শহিদের প্রতিও শ্রদ্ধা জানান।

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্র সংসদের সাধারণ সম্পাদক দেবপ্রতীম সাহা বলেন, শিলচরের এই কেন্দ্রীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়টি স্থানীয় জনগণের বহু আন্দোলনের ফসল। ফলে তাঁদের আবেগকে এড়িয়ে চলতে পারেন না বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্র-গবেষক-শিক্ষক-কর্মীরা। তিনি ব্যক্তিগতভাবেও নাগরিকত্ব সংশোধনী বিলের পক্ষে বলে জানান দেবপ্রতীম।

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্র সংসদের প্রাক্তন সভাপতি মিলন দাস বলেন, বরাকবাসীর ত্যাগকে বাদ দিয়ে এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ভাল চলতে পারে না। বুধবার আসু যেভাবে ছাত্রদের বাঙালিদের বিরুদ্ধে প্ররোচনামূলক স্লোগান দিয়েছে, তিনি এর প্রতিবাদ জানান।

January 10: A day after a torch rally was carried on by a section of the students in Assam University, Silchar against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, another massive demonstration in support of the Citizenship Bill was organised by the students on Thursday evening. Students assembled in large numbers near the main gate of Assam University with placard in their hands and raising slogans. A big banner was put up near the main gate wherein it was written “We support Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.”

Students in large numbers raised slogans against ‘chauvinistic nationalism’. Slogans were also raised paying rich tributes to the 11 language martyrs of 1961. The students pledged that they still remembers and will also remember the sacrifice of the 11 martyrs for the mother tongue ‘Bangla’. On the placards were also written “We are proud to be an Indian and a Bengali”, “We are proud of our language”, “We denounce chauvinistic nationalism”, “Give up narrow mentality” etc.Interestingly, all the placards were written in Bengali.

Speaking during the demonstration, Debopratim Saha, General Secretary of the Assam University Students’ Union said that the University is not a place to indulge in dirty politics of chauvinism. He further said that, “This University has got a special significance as the university has come into existence as a result of series of struggle and so it represents the wishes and aspirations of the people of this valley. Later on, while speaking to way2barak, Debopratim said that he personally supports the Citizenship Bill.

Milon Das former President of Assam University Students’ Union severely criticised the activity of the students who raised anti-Bill slogans on Wednesday. He said “Today we the students, teachers and staff of Assam niversity assembled near the gate of Assam University at 5 PM and extended our full support to the Citizenship Bill. I further condemn the activities of Students belonging to AASU who held a demonstration against the Bill on Wednesday.”

The incident of Wednesday wherein a section of students raised objection to the Bill led to a strong repercussion among the people of this valley. Many have opined that the university which has been established as a result of a series of struggle has failed to show respect to the language martyrs of this valley. However, sensing the public pulse, the students organised a counter demonstration on Thursday wherein they exhibited deep respect towards Bengali language and the language martyrs of this valley.
