Inner Wheel Club takes unique initiative to educate the children of inmates inside Silchar Jail
November 4: Educating a child is perhaps the best thing one can do. This would not only make the child self-dependent in the future but will indirectly be a blessing for the society and the country he or she lives in. But there are children who are deprived of the light of education. Keeping this aspect in mind, Inner Wheel Club of Silchar has taken in hand an unique initiative to become a catalyst of change.
On Monday, a 16-member team of Inner Wheel Club of Silchar visited Silchar Central Jail with a noble purpose that would definitely go a long way in social change. There are a number of female prisoners in Silchar Central Jail belonging from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Assam. Many of the female prisoners also have small children who stay with their mothers inside the prison. These little kids are illiterate.
Inner Wheel Club came forward with a proposal to educate these children in the age group of 3 to 8. A total of 15 such children will be provided free education. In this connection, alphabet books, copies, pencil, erasers, slate and chalk were distributed among these little children. Addressing the female inmates, Jhumki Saha, President of Inner Wheel Club of Silchar said, “We are here to try in our own humble way to educate your children. We even request the mothers to also try and learn atleast to write their names, if not much, along with their kids. We have made arrangement for a teacher who would come inside the jail and teach the little children 4 days in a week. Shyamal Sinha, a young dedicated teacher will teach you.”
Benulal Barman, past President of Rotary Club of Silchar also accompanied Inner Wheel. Speaking during the occasion, Mr. Barman said that both Rotary and Inner Wheel are always besides the inmates of the Jail. He also urged upon the female convicts to study and gets themselves educationally empowered. He informed that Inner Wheel Club is the largest female organisation of the world and thanked the Club for arrangement of such a beneficial programme. He said, “The members of the club will come here from time to time and take note of the progress made by the little children.”
Satyendra Baishya, Jail Superintendent while speaking during the occasion thanked the members of Inner Wheel Club of Silchar for their wishful thought for the children of the female prisoners of Silchar Central Jail. He said that the Inner Wheel Club & Rotary Club of Silchar visits the jail from time to time and distributes essential commodities among them. He urged upon the female prisoners to take keen interest in getting their wards educated. Also present there were Jailor Abhishek Sarkar and Assistant Jailor Nabawdeep Lekharuh.
Apart from the Club President Jhumki Saha and Rotarian Benulal Barman, the other members of Inner Wheel Club who visited the Silchar Central Jail are Secretary- Ankita Ghosh, Sampa Banik, Minu Gope, Sudha Mundra (PDC), Anindita Pal, Ruma Paul, Moutushi Roy, Mousumi Saha, Debjani Roy, Anju Patoa, Archana Choudhury and Moumita Gupta.
