Inner Wheel Club pledges for ‘Orphan Free India’, creates awareness

August 11: A study by an international charity for orphaned and abandoned children found that India is home to 20 million orphans, a figure projected to increase by 2021. Orphaned children are greatly in need of care and protection, being among the most susceptible to poverty, child labour and child trafficking. Keeping these in mind, Inner Wheel Club under its Project Mamta has pledged to create an “Orphan Free India.”

Keeping in tune with with the rest of the country, the Inner Wheel Club of Silchar has also taken in hand various measures for creating awareness in the society so that orphans may soon find a house wherein they will be greeted with love and care.

Speaking to way2barak, Jhumki Saha, President of Inner Wheel Club, Silchar said, “We all members of the club are now involved in a mission to achieve an orphan free country. Our motto is ‘Each one, adopt one.’ If this concept can be put through the consciousness of all, then I believe that it would definitely bring in a positive change towards society’s perception of the orphans.”

Ironically, while on the one hand there are millions of children without parents, on the other, there is an increasingly rising number of infertile couples for most of whom adoption is the last choice. Eventually fed up with medicines and endless trips to the doctors, who they feel were trying to squeeze more and more money out of them, they turn to adoption. “This is the common trend in the society and it is where we want to bring in a change,” said Ankita Ghosh, Secretary of Inner Wheel Club of Silchar.
