Indo-Japan Guwahati Summit cancelled

December 13: The Indo-Japan summit, that was scheduled to be held in Guwahati from 15 December to 17 December, has been cancelled amid the turmoil in the state over the introduction of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Raveesh Kumar, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said, “With reference to the proposed visit of Japanese PM Shinzo Abe’s visit to India, both sides have decided to defer the visit to a mutually convenient date in the near future.”

The first Indo-Japan summit to be held in the Northeast was expected to give a major push to the India-Japan Act East Forum, as Japan had plans to invest around Rs 13,000 cr in projects in the eight states of the region.

On Thursday, Foreign and Home Ministers of Bangladesh also cancelled their trips. Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momin briefed the Japanese envoy to Bangladesh on Wednesday about the regional developments.
