Inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi, Union Bank of India celebrates completion of 100 glorious years

November 11: A journey of hundred long years in the life of any institution speaks volume of its credibility, and moreover, if this long journey is covered by any financial institution, then definitely its credibility becomes unquestionable. Such a long and arduous journey of 100 years was successfully covered by Union Bank of India, one of the leading public sector banks in India.

Union Bank of India was established on 11 November 1919 with its headquarters in the city of Mumbai. The Head Office building of the Bank in Mumbai was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation in the year 1921. To celebrate the completion of its glorious 100 years, the Sonai Road Branch (at Silchar) of Union Bank of India organised a colourful programe along with its staff and esteemed customers.

The celebration programme was presided over by eminent citizen of the locality and Ward Commissioner (Govt. nominated) Ranjit Roy. Speaking during the occasion, Binai Kipgen, the Branch Manager welcomed all its valued customers and said, “The Sonai Road Branch of the Union Bank of India started its journey on 3 March 2009. Since then, there was no looking back. We solicit your valuable suggestions to move forward in a much better way. We have started special facilities for senior citizens and differently-able persons who fails to come up to the branch. We send our staff to them.Our bank has also lowered the rate of interest on loans.”

In his speech Ranjit Roy said, “I am overwhelmed to be associated with this branch of Union Bank and truly speaking I am extremely satisfied with your service. The employees of the branch are always offering service to the customers with a smile. The bank whose Head Office was inaugurated by the Father of the Nation definitely will have ideals to follow. I specially would like to take the name of Basanta Das, the senior most employee of the branch who really helps all customers out of the turn.”

Speaking during the occasion, Sudarshan Gupta, Assistant Professor of Radhamadhab College and a customer of this branch said, “I am elated to be a part of this celebration. Whenever I visit this branch, I go out fully satisfied with the employees of this branch. I wish and hope that may this bank and the branch continue with their services for thousand of years to come.”

This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony by the Branch Manager, Ranjit Roy, staff & customers. It needs mention here that Union Bank has now been merged with Corporation Bank and Andhra Bank. In this scheme, Union Bank of India will be the anchor bank. In the post-merger scenario, Union Bank of India will be the 5th largest Bank in India.

The Bank now operates through over 4200+ branches across the country and has a large clientele base of over  5.7 crores. The present team of over 36,000 members of staff distinguishes itself with its customer centricity, willingness to learn and adherence to values enabling them to be recognized as a caring organization where people enjoy their work and relationship with customers.
