পদ্মশ্রী প্রত্যাখ্যান করলেন গীতা মেহতা
Gita Mehta says no to Padma Shri

২৬ জানুয়ারিঃ পদ্মশ্রী ফিরিয়ে দিলেন লেখিকা গীতা মেহতা। শুক্রবার রাতেই পদ্মশ্রী প্রাপকদের তালিকা ঘোষণা করা হয়।  সব মিলিয়ে মোট ১১৩ জনকে এ বার বেছে নেয় নরেন্দ্র মোদির সরকার। তার মধ্যে লেখিকা গীতা মেহতা অন্যতম। তিনি বর্তমানে নিউইয়র্কে থাকেন। সেখান থেকেই এক বিবৃতি দিয়ে এই পুরস্কার নেওয়ার কথা অস্বীকার করেছেন ওড়িশার মুখ্যমন্ত্রী নবীন পট্টনায়েকের বোন গীতাদেবী।

গীতা মেহতা জানিয়েছেন, “ভারত সরকার আমাকে পদ্মশ্রীর জন্য যোগ্য মনে করায় আমি কৃতজ্ঞ। কিন্তু খুব দুঃখের সঙ্গে জানাচ্ছি, এই সম্মান আমি নিতে পারব না। কারণ সামনেই লোকসভা নির্বাচন। এই সময়ে এই সম্মান ভুল বার্তা দিতে পারে। তাতে ভারত সরকার এবং আমি, দু’জনেই বিব্রত হব। যা আমার পক্ষে আরও বেশি দুঃখজনক হবে।’’ তাঁর অনুমান, পদ্মশ্রী দিয়ে মোদির দল পট্টনায়েকের বিজু জনতা দলের মন পেতে চায়।

তবে মাসকয়েক আগে দিল্লি এসেছিলেন লেখিকা গীতাদেবী। প্রধানমন্ত্রীর আমন্ত্রণে তিনি তখন তাঁর সঙ্গে দেখাও করেন। দীর্ঘ সময় কথা হয় দুজনে। সঙ্গে ছিলেন প্রকাশক-স্বামী সোনি মেহতাও।

January 26: Author Gita Mehta, who is also the sister of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has declined the Padma Shri award announced on Friday. Gita Mehta cited “timing of the award” as the reason for refusing to accept the Padma award. She felt that there could be an impression that she was awarded Padma Shri by the Centre to lure Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik (her brother) ahead of the elections. The writer doesn’t want to offer any scope for such a possibility.

In a statement issued from New York, Gita Mehta said, “I am deeply honoured that the Government of India should think me worthy of a Padma Shri but with great regret I feel I must decline as there is a general election looming and the timing of the award might be misconstrued, causing embarrassment both to the Government and myself, which I would much regret.”

The Cambridge-educated second child of former Odisha chief minister Biju Patnaik, Gita Mehta made her name in 1980 with her first book, Karma Cola: The Marketing of the Mystic East, a non-fiction. Later she took to fiction, and published “Raj and A River Sutra”. She has written, produced and directed a number of documentaries for American, British and European television an covered the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war for liberation of Bangladesh.
