September 5: The issue of construction of amusement park along with star hotel and shopping complex has invited the wrath of the environmentalists and concerned citizens of Silchar. The move to oppose the foundation stone laying ceremony of the projects at Silchar Gandhi Bagh will be inaugurated by Minister Pijush Hazarika. District Congress also rallied along with Sammilito Sanskritik Mancha in protesting near Gandhi Bagh where Minister Hazarika is supposed to lay the foundation stone.
Expressing her view, former MP and President of All India Mahila Congress Sushmita Dev said, “Ignoring the popular aspirations of the people of Silchar, Municipal Chairman is going on with this controversial project. He has violated all norms in doing so. We have joined this movement because the people of Silchar are against this project.”
Ms Dev further challenged the Chief Minister and State Urban Development Minister that if they are so confident that the Gandhi Bagh project has been undertaken as per norms then they should allow investigation this matter by the CMs Vigilance Cell. She said that such an enquiry would bring to surface the vested interest of Niharendra Narayan Thakur, Chairman of Silchar Municipal Board.
Meanwhile, police and CRPF have cordoned off the area and were not allowing the picketers to move towards Gandhi Bhavan. Both Congress & Sammilito Mancha tried to cross the barricade by force, but were prevented by the forces.
Though the foundation stone laying ceremony at Gandhi Bagh was supposed to be at 3 PM but still at 4 PM Minister Pijush Hazarika had not arrived at the spot where the foundation stone would be laid.
